What are the Y-mouse USB Adapter special settings?

Quick Answer:

The Y-mouse special settings activate and deactivate special functions and behaviors for your Y-mouse device.

Further Details:

Activating Special Settings:

Special settings must be activated in a text editor such as Notepad or SimpleText.

Press and hold the "Esc" key, press and release the "s" key, and release the "Esc" key. The Y-Mouse will report its firmware version and settings to the computer. For example "v3.12[w]" means Firmware Version 3.12 with the "W" settings active.

These setting are memorized and remain active even if the Y-mouse is unplugged or moved to another system. To turn on or off any of the special settings use a keyboard connected through the Y-mouse and press and hold the "Esc" key while pressing and releasing the key for that setting.

Activating Special Setting on an Apple computer:

When using a Windows keyboard on an Apple computer, the Windows key is translated as the Apple Command key. Since Apple keyboards and Windows Keyboards have different positions for the Alt/Option and Win/Command keys, the Y-mouse offers two special settings to control the position of those keys to suit the user (please see the following table).

Apple Key Positions on the Windows Keyboard
Y-mouse Setting Windows Keyboard Layout
Left WinKey Left Alt Right Alt Command
W (PC default) Command Alt/Option Alt/Option Command
None (Mac Default) Alt/Option Command Command Alt/Option
WR Alt/Option Command Alt/Option Command
R Command Alt/Option Command Alt/Option

Settings List:

NOTE: These settings take effect when the setting is activated unless otherwise specified.

<Esc + A> This will set all flags to [Q] and [P] only, which is the default mode for Macs. This speeds up the mouse and reverses the "Command" and "Option" keys to the proper settings for Macs.

<Esc + C> This gives the copyright information.

<Esc + E> Stops the normal USB power-off feature. Set this if you want to use the attached mouse and keyboard to wake up the computer. After executing this command, unplug and re-plug the Y-mouse from the USB port or restart your computer to make this special setting take effect.

<Esc + F> Eliminates the keyboard timeout feature to allow keys to be held down for longer than 20 seconds.

<Esc +G> This changes the PC "Windows" keys to Mac "Control" keys, PC "Alt" keys to Mac "Apple" Keys, and PC "Control" keys to Mac "Alt/Option" keys, and sets "F10" to Mac "Control."

<Esc + I> This will cause the mouse to only report standard 3byte nouse commands. This is needed for some SGI USB machines and other systems that can NOT use scroller or multi button information. This works for versions 1.3 and above.

<Esc + O> This will set all flags to [P] and [W] only, which is the default mode for PC's.

<Esc + P>

  • Activated - This setting is a scandinavian or other Foreign "*" key code conversion. The PS/2 code the the "*" hey can be converted into 2 different USB codes. This appears to depend upon the language of the target computer and keyboard. If the "*" key does NOT work properly, this setting may help. This setting also uses a different scan code conversion which works better for some Scandinavian and other Foreign keyboards.
  • Deactivated - Deactivate this setting to get the pipe (|) key to function in UNIX workstations.

<Esc + Q> Sets the mouse speed to a faster mode.

<Esc + R> This setting is for "Windowless" keyboards only. This swaps only the left side PC "Windows" and "Alt" keys into Mac keyboard commands. The left PC "alt" key becomes a Mac "Apple" key and the right PC "Alt" key stays as the "Alt" key.

<Esc + S> This will list the firmware version and active special settings.

<Esc + T>

  • Activated - Allows the operating system to control the "Num Lock" indicator.
  • Deactivated - Default Mode; The adapter controls the state of the "Num Lock" indicator.

<Esc + U> Reports the adapter as a high power device (over 100mA). This does not change any hardware functions.

<ESC + W>

  • Activated - Default PC mode.
  • Deactivated - This changes the PC keyboard commands into Mac keyboard commands. PC "Windows" keys are changed to Mac "Apple" keys, the PC "Alt" Keys to Mac "Alt/Option" keys and PC "Control" keys to Mac "Control" keys.
<Esc + Y>
  • Activated - Sets the Scroll Lock key as a USB scroll lock.
  • Deactivated - Default mode; uses Scroll Lock as the Apple "Power off" key.
